James Filkins is a fingerstyle acoustic guitar player using primarily alternate tunings. His style is a bit new age and a bit just plain hard to describe. His first CD, Borderline Normal, was released in January 2007. Playing guitar has been a part of James' life for over 30 years. His brother got him started and he has tried to measure up to him ever since. Relatively new to fingerstyle guitar, it was Somewhere back in 2001 or 2002 he began to dabble with alternative tunings and quickly headed down the path that has resulted in the CD Borderline Normal. In the process he has eschewed the plectrum and begun thinking about his fingernails far too much. The tunes on Borderline Normal have evolved over the past few years and were recorded at home in various rooms; A homegrown project all the way around with the exception of the mastering by Bill Wolf out in Virginia and art work by Glenn Wolff in Traverse City where James also resides. James used his Mcilroy AJ25cx for most of the tracks with the exception of one that features a Simon Fay Prototype #5 and one that was recorded with a Martin 00016RGT ( For more information on the Mcilroy and the Simon Fay check out the web page). The talented Matt Harting also chips in on a couple of tracks using a Larrivee LV-05. A few tracks also feature acoustic percussion performed by Jon Tornga, Marc Alderman and Michito Sanchez.
"I am constantly inspired by people who grab the reins of their creative abilities whatever they maybe and put them out there. Where this CD will lead me I'm not quite sure, but somewhere in the back of my mind I have always wanted to record and release a CD of original music. I think Walt Whitman might see it as a sort of “barbaric yawp.” That being the case, I think Uncle Walt would agree a barbaric yawp is better than no yawp at all. It might not seem like much of a motivating idea but I'm still working on it. I don't consider myself much of a technician when it comes to playing the guitar. These are the sounds that I am inspired to make for whatever reason inspiration intends. I am not quite sure how to categorize or evaluate the music I make but one of my favorite guitar players described earlier versions of some of the tunes on Borderline Normal as tone poems, which sounds about right to me."
