Pianist/composer Amy Duncan has been playing professionally since she was 15 years old, when she joined the musicians' union and formed her own band. She was mainly self-taught, transcribing melodies and improvised solos from jazz recordings of musicians like Charlie Parker, Gerry Mulligan, Thelonious Monk and others..

At the beginning of the 1960s, in Boston, Massachusetts, Amy gathered a group of musicians together from the “free jazz” movement, led by master saxophonist Sam Rivers. "That was when I learned to listen and react to what the other musicians were playing," says Amy. At the end of the decade, Amy traveled extensively through Mexico and South America. She returned to Boston in 1976 and started to play in various clubs and shows, and on television. From 1989 to 1984 Amy played every year at the Women's Jazz Festival in Kansas City, where she formed an "All-Star" band that was highly praised by legendary critic Leonard Feather in Jazz Times Magazine.

During all this time, her big dream was to move to New York city, the jazz musicians' mecca. She finally made the move in 1981. At first she played only with small groups in various clubs and restaurants, but in 1984 she formed a 10-piece band, Brass Tacks, that ended up playing in many shows and clubs in New York, including the famous Blue Note and the Knitting Factory. read more
