Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, is famous for countless musicians noticeably Scottish, French, Celtic in their roots. Late into the evening living room jam parties are a common experience. Music is often a common family language.

Colleen Coadic's grandmother spoke and sang in fluent French, while baking the bread for the week. Her grandfather, a self taught accordion player, encouraged Colleen to sing along while he played. Her free spirit mother painted, and sang in musicals. Her father was a local favorite bass player, always in a band. Colleen and her younger brother sang harmonies to their parents' songs on the radio, in the back seat of the family car.

As is the Nova Scotia tradition, Colleen's first instrument came via a school program: ukulele. As a left handed person in a classroom of right handed players, she learned to play right handed - this extended to all subsequent string instruments.

When she turned fourteen, her father gave Colleen her first music resources: an acoustic guitar, a stereo, and Led Zeppelin 2. With a three chord vocabulary, Colleen entered her first (and last) beauty contest, placing 1st for her talent performance singing and playing guitar. This first live audience solo performance experience hooked her.

When her mother moved Colleen and her brother to northern British Columbia two years later, and Colleen wrote her first song "Keep On" with a fellow 10th grade guitar club member. By now, acting and singing in local theater productions, she won awards and scholarship recommendations for her acting ability.

She graduated from singing two songs a night to permanent singer-bass guitar when the bass player in her high school band, Driver, abruptly quit. Next came "Big Hits," twelve original songs on which Colleen also played all the instruments. Fresh out of high school, with her sites set on touring Europe, Colleen joined "Fear of Flying" instead, as a bass player/backup singer, and spent the next four years touring coast to coast year round. This bilingual band, based out of Montreal, gave it's youngest member, Colleen, her first television, radio, magazine, and recording studio experiences.

While attempting to write their first CD during an eight week tour in Alaska, Colleen accepted a full-time gig as lead singer, playing bass - finally a chance to concentrate on her own song writing. Anchorage became home.

Two years later, to produce her first CD, Colleen sold her worldy possessions, and moved back to Vancouver, Canada. She was awarded four Canadian government F.A.C.T.O.R grants, encouraging excellence in music, which she used to aid her recording process. Through the help of many friends, Say Anything, was born.

Colleen returned to work in Alaska, and gathered the funds to produce a video for the first single on the CD, "I Am." The video quickly began regular rotation on Canada's CMT network, spreading to MTV Europe and Manhattan Cable. The album charted in several countries, and garnered attention from record labels, critics, distribution companies, and many new fans. While planning a followup CD, Colleen was introduced to band bass player/fiance/producer Sean Cobb. Convinced a world class production was possible in Alaska, Sean and Colleen recorded T o D a Y, and a romance was born.

Critics declared CD #3, Scream of Consciousness, a more experimental set of songs. It was written with then trio drummer Kris Rosentrater, a longtime friend and bandmate of Sean's over many sessions of just jamming and exploring whatever mood or style arose that particular day. Colleen became Colleen Coadic and The Next Twelve, a short-lived name change. By now performing solo nightly, as well as with the band, Colleen also began opening for international touring acts , including Alanis Morrisette. Next came touring, including with Ani DiFranco.

Isolated from any music mecca, living in Alaska allows Colleen and band to write without distractions. But by this time in their growth there was a need for easy, fulltime access to world class recording facilities and equipment. Colleen and Cobb began planning 12 Records Studio, and gathering the gear for a state of the art facility.

The Opposite Only Better was recorded in a 700 sq. foot apartment, by now packed with gear for the upcoming studio construction. The living room was also the control room, from which the recoding console jutted into the kitchen. The apartment was located next to the airport, and the world's largest seaplane base. Vocals were recorded at 4 am, to avoid picking up the planes in the microphones.

Sometime during the making of this CD, Colleen's mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Music and much of life was put on hold as Colleen traveled to Canada to care for her young mother. Ultimately, this fourth CD was recorded almost four times through, and with four different drummers. It was completed a few months after Colleen's Mom's passing.

Two years later, recovered and renewed, You Feel This Good was the first CD to be recorded at the new studio. While initially absorbing much time away from the road, building the studio now allows the band to record anytime.

Having made a living from music all her life, and having grown up in bars, Colleen now draws on this new environment to add new electricity to her song style. CD #6, The Glass Is Half Full Girl, to be released later this year.

The studio is also a much needed resource for other promising Alaskan artists, some signed to the newly formed label: 12 Records.

Along the way, Colleen has amassed an impressive list of awards and accomplishments:
