The School for Wonder cultivates courage by offering private retreats, experiential learning, group workshops, community service projects, and hosting events.
Founder Jesse White began schooling for wonder in 1962 at the ripe old age of six. Afraid of the dark then, her first meditations were on the light coming through the slats in the closet door. From there she moved into refusing to take afternoon naps, built her first house in the treetops, and wrote poetry in the wilderness.
Jesse's ancestors included the first educators to open college doors to women and people of color, the first global plant explorer, and the first Choctaw Chief to run for the United States Congress. She still remembers standing outside her kindergarten door on her first day of school, listening to her teacher instruct her NOT to climb on the monkey bars, NOT to ride the wooden trucks, and to play ONLY in the doll house with the other girls. In junior high she started a band called "The New Town Policy", and by 1972 her high school class held a successful sit-down strike on the curb, until the administrators dropped the dress code. She silently vowed to have her own school by the time she turned thirty, and left for the Southwest during her mass communication degree program.
A native of Indiana, Jesse settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1983. A lover of nature and caretaker for private homes, she lives a contemplative life and turns her poems into compositions. She assisted hospice patients and encouraged friends to access their hidden talents. Ten years later she sang for 200 people at the funeral of her friend Melissa Patterson. Changed by the experience, Jesse felt called to share her newfound voice and original music. Within a month she had performance engagements seven days a week, a contract to book daytime talent for a local venue, media coverage, and a clear purpose in view. More
