Growing up in the small town of Kindred, ND, Josh Harty has always been involved in music. At age 6 he was singing with his father at area nursing homes. By 9 he had learned to play guitar and released his first album, a collection of country gospel he describes as “a nine-year-old’s version of Oh Brother Where Art Thou?” Since his father served as town sheriff, and later on a part time preacher, Josh pretty much had to be a good kid, since “I was either going to jail or going to hell.”

His first solo record, Three Day Notice, deftly combines his diverse gospel, blues and rock influences. Highlights include the beautifully haunting “What About You” and the winningly sincere “Minna Miller.” That record’s title came courtesy of the eviction notice he found on his apartment door the day he finished recording; completing his second record certainly hasn’t been any easier. Owing partly to his perfectionism and partly to bad luck (one recording was lost to a computer error), it’s now been recorded a total of six times.

Admittedly, there’s no doubt A Long List of Lies will be worth the wait. Since moving to Madison, WI in 2004, Josh has grown both as a musician and as a lyricist. His guitar playing is nothing short of stunning and his smart, confessional lyrics belie his age. It’s somewhat surprising that “Empire Bar,” the most astutely autobiographical of the bunch, was written by his friend Dietrich Gosser.

Or maybe it’s not that surprising. Spend some time with Josh’s songs; it doesn’t take long to feel like you know him.

Josh Harty sauntered onto the bustling Madison folk scene when the young songwriter settled in the small city after a 26 year spell in Fargo, ND. “Josh Harty is one of the best young talents I have heard in years,” says Bob Reha of Minnesota Public Radio after hearing Josh open for B.B King in Fargo, North Dakota. Josh’s performance impressed regional promoters and led to opening performances with Robert Cray, Roger McGuinn (of the Byrds),Keb Mo, and several engagements with Kelly Joe Phelps.

Harty, a regular on the Madison scene, is described by the Dane 101 as “one of Madison’s best singer/songwriters,” while the Pulse (Minneapolis ,MN) calls him “an uncanny acoustic guitar based talent…a voice reminiscent of folk pioneer John Gorka.” “Josh Harty is one of those talents who you’re not sure if you should applaud in adoration,” says the Duluth News Tribune, “or strangle out of envy.”

Josh Harty is a classic example of "Made In America." He blends contemporary midwestern sensibility wth traditional gospel and blues to create a rich hybrid unique in the field of acoustic guitar. His poignant lyrics are the product of astute observation and thoughtful introspection. His crisp, emotive guitar couples with warm, smoky vocals that settle comfortably into each listener's ear. His songs are planted in the fertile soil of experience and nourished with the stuff of everyday life.

As a kid growing up in Kindred, ND, population 650, Josh discovered the beauty of music and the connection of performance at age six during several nursing home and church tours with his dad. By age 10, he was playing guitar and making records with his dad, producing two full-length albums of a acoustic gospel music.

From his beginnings in gospel music through his experiences with several bands, Josh now focuses his musical expression on a more traditional "roots" sound.

Josh has created a volume of work that is at times focused on his experiences and lessons learned and at times focused on the lives of others and of giving voice to their experiences. His songs evoke feelings that each listener can identify with. His lyrics and music linger and satisfy more fully and deeply that today's disposable pop songs. He never sacrifices the catch nature or hook and his songs offer satisfing elements. While listening to Josh, one can appreciate some of the infuences on his musial achievements: the ballad-style of Eric Clapton, the blues work of Robert Johnson, and the guitar stylings of Kelly Joe Phelps.
