Kacey Jones is a singer-songwriter with a full powerful voice, a bent for country music, and a wild and wicked sense of humor.
For years, Jones has virtually been the laughing stock of the music industry. She's been laughed at outside the Nashville city limits by the likes of People Magazine, USA Today, Billboard, The WoodSongs Old Time Radio Hour, CMT and GAC Television Networks, and on National Public Radio as Garrison Keillor’s guest on A Prairie Home Companion. With Kacey Jones there's a lot to laugh about.
Her latest project is the soundtrack to the hilarious new play, "Nipples To The Wind" by playwright, Paula Coco. As Music Supervisor for the original soundtrack, Kacey contributed fourteen of the nineteen tracks on the CD (to be released nationally in April, 2007). A follow-up to Kacey's last music-comedy project, "Every Man I Love is Either Married, Gay, or Dead...LIVE," "Nipples To The Wind" is not only stacked with humorous appeal, but in establishing the vocal talent and comedy genius caught in the grooves.
In the hard work-a-day world of carving a national name as one of the brightest new musical humorists to break through in recent years, Kacey Jones is used to breaking the mold. Singer, songwriter, musician, recording artist, producer, and publisher — all distinct descriptions that fit only one unique piece of this puzzle. When completely assembled, the one that emerges is that of a delightful, born and bred in the San Francisco Bay Area, madcap redhead who sees the world at large with laser perception and a funny tilt. She can also render a ballad that'll break your heart. Witness, "Kacey Jones Sings Mickey Newbury." Released in 2006, this critically acclaimed masterpiece contains nary a titter of laughter but, Kacey's emotional execution of this beautiful collection of Newbury songs reaches into the places that run deep.
"I'm a singer-songwriter-musician first," says Jones. "I don't consider myself a stand-up comedian but I enjoy making people laugh. I'm more in the tradition of musical humorists like Roger Miller, Mae West, and Tom Lehrer. But I also enjoy singing a good ballad. That's why I recorded the tribute to Newbury. I love to see people laugh so hard at the funny songs that tears roll down their cheeks. I also love to see their eyes well up when I sing a ballad that reminds them of someone of something they've lost. Tears of laughter, tears of sorrow...they're all good. They let us know we're alive, and they let me know I've connected. If that sounds a bit schizophrenic...welcome to my world."
If it all seems off the wall, it's totally sane in the world of Kacey. Hers was, after all, the brilliant mind that conceived one of Nashville's most unique and revered cult groups, the all-girl Ethel and The Shameless Hussies, who broke above the waves in the late 1980s to mainstream nominations as Comedy Act of the Year, as well as a major contract with MCA Records. As lead singer and lead comedy writer, Kacey put the Shameless Hussies on America's national radar.
Further proving that her talents could produce more than just a few good laughs, Kacey went into the studio with legendary cult artist, Kinky Friedman, only to emerge as the producer of his critically acclaimed project, Pearls in the Snow. The album reached the #1 spot on the Americana radio chart in 1999 and provided her the opportunity to produce tracks for Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, Tom Waits, Dwight Yoakam, Delbert McClinton, Guy Clark, Asleep At The Wheel, plus a reunion of Kinky Friedman and The Texas Jewboys.
Movies were next to fall under her spell. Kacey contributed three original songs to the soundtrack of the award winning cult film, Sordid Lives starring Beau Bridges, Olivia-Newton-John, Delta Burke, Bonnie Bedalia, and Leslie Jordan.
Kacey is also the Official Songstress and Royal Minstrel to The Sweet Potato Queens. "I hitched my wagon to the Sweet Potato Queens' rising star five years ago," states Jones, "as a result, I have the support and admiration of 75,000 fabulous women (and a few Spud Studs)... it's a Royal ride and I enjoy every minute of it.".
