Miss Kate’s very first guitar teacher made her play jazz standards over and under when she was eleven years old, even though what she liked to listen to on her boom box at home was Tina Turner and Rickie Lee Jones. Kate’s debut studio album, No Love Lost, reflects these early days. She has written new jazz standards with persuasive arrangements and melodies that you might think you’ve heard all your life. Lyrically, No Love Lost is poetic and on point. Kate is at home, with her high and dry voice, singing jazz and a bit of the blues. Sometimes she sneaks out to flirt with pop gestures and attitudes.

Kate plays a Novax 8-string, the instrument made famous by jazzer Charlie Hunter. The Novax has five guitar strings and three bass strings, and the way it swings is satisfying. Kate is a shy child of Pennsylvania, a Harvard graduate and Berklee alum, and since 2005 a resident of what is known as the “Royal City,” Guelph, Ontario, Canada, an hour outside Toronto.

I've always enjoyed Kate's music. It's out of my realm of "major chords and harmony" mostly I think - it's downright "weird" in some ways. I usually don't like stylized attempts to be creative just for creativity's sake because I get lost. But Kate's music doesn't strike me that way. I think her creativity is an honest expression of what's going on inside ... kind of convoluted but beautiful in a unique and interestingly listenable way. Maybe it's because she sent one of the most beautiful and memorable homemade CD covers ever ... but, whatever it is, I listen when I hear Kate's music come on.
