Les Barker is a combination stand-up comic/silly poet, and former accountant. He was born in Manchester, but now claims to be Welsh. His poems have been the inspiration for a number of comic folk heroes: Jason and the Arguments, Cosmo the Fairly Accurate Knife Thrower, Captain Indecisive and Spot of the Antarctic, to name but two.

Les's quirky verse is full of plays on words, and unusual puns. The poems are funny by themselves, but Les has the carefully practiced delivery and timing of a stand-up comic... and takes a certain joy of letting the audience anticipate what he is going to say, but making them wait for it. His albums are recorded live, and his interplay with the audience is part of the treat to listening to him. The other is his British accent; somehow just the right inflection to make what he is saying all the funnier. Most of all, his words make you think. The humor is enhanced by his really biting satire and sometimes political commentary.

Les has several comedy albums to his credit: Dogologues, An Infinite Number of Occasional Tables, A Cardi and Bloke, Up the creek without a poodle, Arovertherapy and The War on Terrier. In addition there are three highly acclaimed albums of his serious work; the folk opera The Stones of Callanish, Some Love, The Wings of Butterflies, and Airs of the Dog, all involving a galaxy of talent. His serious songs have also featured on albums by Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick, and by June Tabor. June invariably includes a smattering of Mr Barker's serious and comic songs in her live performances. The Kingston Trio and Tom Paxton have also recorded Mr Barker's songs'. He has travelled the length, breadth and height of Great Britain, as well as Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States and Canada.

"Depending on your state of health this man could be a real tonic to your wellbeing or fatal. Mostly he's a ray of sunshine capable of brightening up the darkest day." --Kevin Meehan .
