Ms. Rachel Ries hails from the inspiring, vast expanses of South Dakota. There she first began raising her melodious and lilting voice while learning to appreciate clean, country living. That good life sadly aside for a time, she can be found somewhere in Chicago's west side, wide-eyed and only halfways citified, writing up a storm.
Classically trained in voice, piano, violin and viola, Rachel marries sophisticated, vintage musicality to smart lyrics. Like Andrew Bird and Erin McKeown, she has developed an urban cult following based on a fresh approach to musical forms of the '20s and '30s.† With a self-taught guitar style reminiscent of Mississippi John Hurt and vocals that at times recall Billie Holiday and early Maria Muldaur, her songs range from the romantic simplicity of jazz standards to the distilled intensity of poet Anne Sexton. Ms. Ries has an adventurous ear for melody and a voice flexible enough to accomplish it.
Much of 2007 saw Ries at home in Chicago, making homemade jam and piecing together her latest album, Without a Bird. Warmly analog and carefully orchestral, Without a Bird showcases the artistry of some of Chicago's finest players: Kevin O'Donnell (Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire, Neko Case), Joel Paterson (Devil in a Woodpile, Kelly Hogan, Steve Dawson), Alison Chesley (Bob Mould, Verbow, Poi Dog Pondering) and Ariel Bolles (Bakelite 78). Without a Bird was recorded and mixed analog and is available on both CD and vinyl through Rachel's own label, SoDak Records. Also anticipated is the release of a split 10 of country duets, created with Righteous Babe recording artist, Anais Mitchell.
