Mixing traditional roots with progressive ideas, Sarah Siskind, the “inspired and passionate otherworldly folk artist” (Nashville Rage) is bringing a new edge to Americana music in Nashville and beyond.
“(Her) songs and her arrangements manage to evoke classical art songs, Celtic balladry, torchy late-night jazz, hippie-era folk music and the uptown avant-garde in equal measure, while coalescing into something entirely new and transcendentally beautiful.” (Craig Havighurst, The Tennessean)
Growing up in a family of bluegrass musicians, Sarah began writing music on the piano at a very young age and released her first full-length album Horizon Cries at the age of 14. In her home state of North Carolina, Sarah performed regionally, and collected awards from songwriting associations and various contests. Promoting her first record at 14, she shared the bill on a radio show with other North Carolina natives Maya Angelou and Doc Watson.
By 18, Sarah was eager to travel and moved to Seattle, Washington where she continued to develop her writing style and perform live. At this time, she began to play guitar, and influenced by such players as Martin Carthy (the Bothy Band) and John McLaughlin (Mahavishnu Orchestra), she found her own style in open tunings and driving rhythms.
In 1998, she settled in Nashville, Tennessee.
In 2001, she went into the studio to record the full-length album, Covered, which was released by Infrasound Collective in January 2002. Joining her in the studio were legendary avant-garde/jazz guitarist Bill Frisell and Jennifer Kimball, among others. Sarah went on to share the stage with such artists as Ron Sexsmith, Maura O’Connell, Peter Mulvey, Cheryl Wheeler, and Tim O’Brien. Ron Sexsmith stated “Sarah writes beautiful songs that resonate”; while Tim O’Brien said “it’s rare to hear anyone with such a strong vision.”
PIECES FROM ME...
I just like to play music. I have an electric guitar named Larry. The guitar in the pictures is my Strat, Stan. I like to watch NBA basketball, especially the Spurs and the Grizzlies. I cook a lot and particularly enjoy staples from my N.C. childhood such as Lexington-style BBQ* and livermush. It's not as gross as it sounds. I love my family and my parents and my brother, sister-in-law, and niece and nephew all eat dinner together once a week. I love my Toyota. Writing songs is the closest thing to me besides my bff FN...um, this is all I can think of for now. :)
