Sista Monica Parker was born and raised in Gary, Indiana, USA. She was singing with her church's gospel choir from the early age of seven, and toured with the choir in the Gary, Detroit and Chicago area as a young girl.

Her early professional life included a stint in the Marines (achieving the rank of Sergeant), then running her own executive search firm in Silicon Valley.

Monica's musical influences include The Rev. Al Green, Aretha Franklin, Mavis Staples and the Staples Singers, Jackie Wilson and Sam Cooke. In 1992, Monica decided to dedicate herself full time to her music, and she was soon sharing local stages with Mavis Staples, Gladys Knight, Taj Mahal, Luther Allison, Little Milton, Koko Taylor, Etta James, Bobby "Blue" Bland, and other blues and Rhythm and Blues greats..
