There are several definitions of the term ballad. The word originated from Old French (balade - to dance, song to dance to) in the 15th century. In the 18th century in English ballad came to describe a poem usually set to music, often telling a story.

Folk musicians usually use "ballad" to refer to a narrative strophic song, traditional or newly composed, that may be fast or slow. Folk ballads often have several verses. This is how the Ballad tag is used on Whole Wheat Radio.
