Bossa nova (Portuguese for "new trend") is a musical style originating from Brazil and popularized from 1958-63. The style has evolved from rhythmic samba music, fused with jazz and is now characterized as having more complex harmonies and diminished percussion than the samba style. The rhythm sways as opposed to swings, as in jazz. This style of music is usually played on classical guitar and/or piano. Occasionally the style may incorporate orchestral or electronic accompaniment, giving the music a more "lounge" or "elevator" sound.
