During the late 1950s, ska was created in Jamaica from elements of American jazz, rhythm and blues and Caribbean Calypso and Mento folk music. By the 1960s it was the popular music of Jamaica, and was also popular in the UK. It has a characteristic walking bass line, accented rhythm on the offbeat (known as a skank or upstroke) and occasionally jazzy horn riffs. Sub genres include: 2 Tone (UK style with punk rock influence, specifically with guitar; also referred to as bluebeat) and Third wave (US continuation of 2 Tone-like punk rock influence).
