Are the Girl/Guy With Guitar tags needed now that we have a Solo Performer tag? The more general Solo Performer would let us request music with instruments other than guitar and the tags are currently being used on everything from instrumentals to songs with a full band. • We have 12-string guitar, Acoustic guitar, Classical guitar, Dobro, Electric guitar, Harp guitar, Jazz guitar, Resonator guitar, Slide guitar, Steel guitar tags as well as numberous other instruments so I think we can make the distiction between guitars and other instruments. We also have solo performer, and male/female tags. In terms of generating shows, we can filter any combination of performer and instrument, so Girl with Guitar/Guy with Guitar appears to be redundant. Cub Driver 08:27, July 14, 2008 (AKDT)
Exactly. Thanks for saying it better than me. Image:Smile.gif Kelli (talk/contribs) 08:38, July 14, 2008 (AKDT)

Any thoughts on if it would be better to have a bot (if Jim has time) replace Girl/Guy With Guitar tags with Solo Performer or just start over? The tags haven't only been used on solo performers, but we could remove the incorrect ones when we hear them. Maybe the bot could exclude songs that have a Band tag. If using a bot, it should also make sure that it replaces the Girl/Guy With Guitar tag with the individual Girl/Guy and Guitar tags for songs that don't already have those tags. Chris (talk/contribs) 16:47, July 18, 2008 (AKDT)
There are no gender tags on song pages, those are on the artist pages and already done. Guitar can't be replaced since we don't know which kind of guitar. Kelli (talk/contribs) 05:18, July 19, 2008 (AKDT)
I'm agnostic (for a change) on whether we keep this one or not, but I do feel strongly that if it goes it should just go rather than having the bots try to replace it with something. Really, anything it might be replaced with would be likely to be inaccurate for a lot of songs.
And one more thing -- the best argument for girl/guy with guitar is that it gives us gender on songs -- sometimes I'd like to hear a bunch of women singing (and, as Mert would suggest, on key . . . ) and even though I'm a regular I wouldn't know how to create shows that would generate that. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Edesombr (talkcontribs) Please sign comments with four tildes ~~~~
Genders are kept on Artist pages. See Mert's Women Who Hopefully Can Sing on Key Show for an example of how to use it. Kelli (talk/contribs) 13:45, July 21, 2008 (AKDT)

Just to throw my tuppence, or two cents :), into the debate, a lot of us are "wiki savvy" but the less tech minded listener might be slightly overwhelmed by filtering, for example, as Cub wrote, filtering using gender, solo performer, instrument etc to create a specialised show along the lines of a "Girl/Guy with guitar" show. For the non-techy listener, it might be easier for them just to be able to click on "Girl/Guy with guitar" to create a show that way. Big Tom (talk/contribs) 23:58, July 18, 2008 (AKDT)

I do think we need instructions for creating shows when Jim has time to document the features (they will probably change since he has plans to work on the code again). There are hundreds of shows already created so I'm not sure I see a big need for creating new ones. Kelli (talk/contribs)
You can filter on more than one tag? I had no idea. I would like to know how to do that.... so to Big Tom's point, those of us that are wiki clueless either need a short "how to" or there may be a need to keep redundant tags in the meantime.Jenny (talk/contribs) 09:43, July 19, 2008 (AKDT)

Today Mert requested what struck me as a quintessential "Girl with guitar" show -- all of the songs really were just sparsely-produced women singing with guitars and pretty much nothing else; it convinced me that the tag is useful, because it would be almost impossible to re-create that kind of show without it. Even if you chose solo vocalist and acoustic guitar you'd still have to filter out "and not mandolin, or dobro, or fiddle, or drums" -- if we take the concept as intended, it's a really useful concept; and we can work on removing that tag from places where it isn't used to denote that.
