All the birthday girls — Esther, Cindy, Fine-line and Onthebus — do the birthday cake thing.

Esther's 40th Birthday was Sept. 12, 2006. Four days of frolic and celebration were held in Talkeetna.

Day 1 (Tues., Sept. 12, 2006)

Esther drives to Anchorage to pick up Fine-line and Onthebus arriving from Washington State.

See photos.

Day 2 (Wed., Sept. 13, 2006)

Esther has two sips of coffee and gets on the mic and updates everyone about her birthday.

The crusty dishes from the Kristina Olsen house concert are finally washed by Fine-line and Onthebus. FineLine and Onthebus set out on a walk on a beautiful Alaskan day, get lost in the HUGE town of Talkeetna, not once by twice, but do find the river and the cemetery.

Meanwhile Esther and JimBob head to the Wheat Palace and successfully install the stovepipe. JimBob lights the first fire in the newly installed woodstove in the Wheat Palace and does not burn the place down.

A wonderous Birthday Dinner for Esther was hosted at the home of Karey and Ross and the adorable two year old Finn. Tacos, burnt cookies and ice cream and good company were enjoyed around the fire.

Day 3 (Thurs., Sept. 14, 2006)

Esther got a visit from her 'friend'....her period. We're not sure what's going to happen today. Stay tuned....

Morning spent at the Wheat Palace. FineLine and Onthebus took down the greenhouse and organized the shed. Esther sanded the small cabin. Jim? He was caught sleeping...it's on camera and will be posted sometime, somewhere. The women did all the work.

Esther was spectacular on the Skil saw as she carved out the perfect piece of contured plywood so the bath could fit. (Her 'friend' was particularly present during this task)

The gurls all left and Jim waved goodbye. It was naptime for Jim. Yawn.....

Back at the Wheathole Esther, FineLine and OTB continued to work work work....bookeeping, splitting and hauling wood....what was Jim doing? After getting on the microphone we all discover he was with a woman named Meg over at the Palace. Ohhh... my.

Yummy veggie dinner. We are expected at the Palace at 6 a.m. tomorrow Jim's orders. Yawn.....

Day 4 (Fri., Sept. 15, 2006)

An on-line WWR party happened around 6 p.m. Talkeetna time.

Onthebus, ZiggyD, Fine-line, So lost, Lost, Cindy, and, of course, Jimbob were on-air to share the fun.

See photos.

Dear Image:tinyesther.jpg,

Oodles of wishes for a hbtypecp.

One with a special cake444, lots of kisshug and funkid

Love,

Esther, dear Esther.

I've probably known a few thousand people in my 54 years, and I'm pleased to say that you rank right up there among my favorites. You're only 40? How in the hell did you get so good in only 40 years? Your dulcimer and flute playing never cease to amaze me, and your voice... Damn near perfection. You should be famous.

As I write this, I'm listening to you play Danny Schmidt's "Happy All The Time." Absolutely gorgeous. I think even Danny would prefer your version.

So why aren't you a famous and rich musician? Just imagine if things had worked out differently. Something like this…

  • 1966: I, J-Walk, am a 13-year old post-pubescent teen, living in St. Louis. Esther is born into a Jewish family.
  • 1976: I'm 23, employed as a talent analyst by a local TV station in an unnamed city in the eastern time zone. Esther is 10. I'm working on a local TV show called "Jewish Chick Talent Hunt." Esther comes in 7th place (out of 8).
  • 1986: I'm in an unnamed city in the eastern part of the U.S. For the past ten years, I've been obsessed with Esther. As is my custom on business trips, I look up the Goltons in the local phone book, and dial all of the numbers, asking for Esther. As luck would have it, I found her. Right there in the unnamed city! She's now of legal age, and I ask her out for a drink.
  • 1987: A year of heavy dating, heavy drinking, and light petting.
  • 1988: Esther and I are living in sin in Nashville, Tennessee. I'm working as a Garbage Collection Analyst for the city, and Esther just stays home and listens to music.
  • 1989: I give Esther a flute for Christmas. She refuses it, and tells me to wait until Hanukkah.
  • 1990: Esther is getting pretty good on the flute. So good, that I give her a dulcimer for Hanukkah.
  • 1991: Esther is mastering both instruments, but she claims that she needs a break from her music, and wants to hike the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine in order to "get her head together". I'm too busy with my garbage collection analysis reports to accompany her, so she goes alone. Several months later, she comes back and tells me about some jerk named Jim Kloss, who wouldn't leave her alone. I made a mental note. I'll never forget that name.
  • 1992: A well-known record industry executive is having garbage collection problems, so I'm sent to his mansion to analyze the situation, and write a report. One thing leads to another, and the next thing you know I have an audition date for Esther.
  • 1993: Esther's first recording is "well-received" (as they say), but is not widely distributed. I quit my job and become Esther's manager and personal analyst.
  • 1994 -1999: Esther and I live a meager existence in Nashville. We bought a 14x14 foot house, but Esther thinks it's too big. So we scale down 52 square feet, and she's happy. Esther continues to record, but her career has stagnated. We still feel that she's just lacking that one "big break" (as they say). During lulls, I analyze the neighborhood garbage just for old time's sake.
  • 2000: I'm at a smoky bar, drinking Scotch, and I strike up a conversation with another record company executive. One thing leads to another, and the next thing you know I'm signing a contract. As it worked out, an up-and-coming artist was scheduled to record a "sure hit," but she flaked out. Esther will be recording the unnamed song.
  • 2001: Esther Golton's dulcimer-laden recording of "Oops, I Did It Again" hits #1 on the charts. The money is rolling in. Between bubble baths and parties, our toes took root. Everyone is happy all the time.
  • 2002-2004: The hits just keep on coming. Esther and I buy a 40,000 square foot mansion in Nashville, shaped like a dulcimer. The doorbell is programmed to play "Oops, I Did It Again."
  • 2005: Esther is nominated for six Grammys, and wins five of them. For some reason, she still talks about that Jim Kloss character from the Appalachian Trail.
  • 2006-2012: Esther hooks up with Jim Kloss, and moves to Alaska. Millions of fans around the world eagerly await Esther's next CD, "Bent Nails" -- produced by my Jim Kloss, my nemesis. But Jim and Esther are pretty much happy all the time, so he may soon be downgraded to my ex-nemesis.

We can't change history. Happy birthday, Esther. --J-Walk 18:33, September 8, 2006 (AKDT)

Unlike JWalk, I don't think it's amusing to make up false facts about a person's life. So, I'll just wish Esther-Westher the happiest 40th birthday ever! --Toad 14:37, September 9, 2006 (AKDT)

Have a happy Birthday Esther, from the upper left hand corner. Reed

Happy Birthday Esther!! So you are 40 huh? The way I see it, your only as old as you feel...so my advice...stay young at heart and soul....and the mind and body will follow.

Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional.
Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional.

Hope you have a GREAT DAY!! BlueRidge 06:36, September 12, 2006 (AKDT)

Life begins at 40 - but so do fallen arches, rheumatism, faulty eyesight, and the tendency to tell a story to the same person, three or four times.

Happy Birthday Esther! All my favorite people are Virgos...NewBreeze had her birthday yesterday, and my grandmother last Thursday (93). In fact, also on Thursday I had two passengers travelling cross country on THEIR birthdays, 92 and 93. We're all well past 40...the best is yet to come :) ---Bis

Dearest Esther, You are getting closer to me in age, and that's not necessarily a good thing! I sorta like having a very cool younger sister....sorta??? nay...I DO like having you in my life. You are a true spirit that I can connect with and a joy to have. Lucky that Jim has you, because if I was a lessie, I'd make the moves on YOU!  :) Have a lovely day and may it be the first day of a truely wonderful year of love, laughs and GOOD surprises. Us Virgo's are THE best. *warm tight hugs* Take care hon, Cindy 11:58, September 12, 2006 (AKDT)

"Sto lat, sto lat, niech zyje zyje nam," translates from Polish as "Good luck, good cheer, may you live a hundred years."

Esther, I'll bet you make EVERYONE wish they were 40! It's really a whole lot of fun. well, at least I THINK it was. Or have I just heard that? The thing is . the memory starts to get a little.. uh shall we say flaky at about 40. So there is a possibility that you are going to have all sorts of fun and then not be able to remember it. My advice is to constantly hang around with younger people. Then they can remind you of what happened.

I have looked at everyone's clever birthday greetings and realize that September is really my brain dead month. the best I can do right now is to say HAPPY BIRHTDAY and wish you many more.

Here, let's sing the chorus of John McCutcheon's birthday song, " Cut the Cake"

It makes me think of the good old days

Happy birthday to you

You sure grew out of your baby ways

Happy birthday to you

Esther's 40th birthday we wish you many more

Health and wealth and friends by the score

Cut the cake and let's eat some more

Happy birthday to you!

and these words from Tom Chapin to the tune of the Merry Widow Waltz

Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday

We love you

Happy Birthday

and may all your

dreams come true.

When you blow out the candles

One light stays aglow

It's the love light in your eyes

Where e'er you go

and from me:

tuiltje

Love, LuAnna

Wait, you're only 40?! A baby! How did you get to be so talented and smart in such a short time???

Live it up, and love it. Just think how much fun you'll have in the next 40 years.  :)
