Noatun is an older media player bundled with the KDE desktop, found on Unix-like operating systems such as Linux and FreeBSD.

Unique features

  • Perfect for listening to Whole Wheat Radio on slower machines with less RAM that struggle with more fully featured but larger KDE players such amaroK or Kaffeine.
  • Whenever the song changes in the audio stream (or in the playlist), a handy on-screen-display (OSD) appears for a few seconds in the top corner of the screen.
  • Can be skinned to look identical to Winamp on Windows!
  • Has a hard name to figure out the pronounciation of.

Tuning into the streams

Noatun doesn't seem to like the listen.pls files you download when you click the Listen links on the sidebar. The solution is to use the URL for the stream itself.

Choose the File menu and click Open as if you're opening a local file. In the Location combobox, enter one of the following URLs:

Caveats

  • Because (by their very nature) audio streams don't have a known end time, Noatun has problems with time keeping. Seeing 00:00 in the status bar is normal.
  • Other than the OSD, seeing the name of the currently playing track can be more difficult. Resizing the main player window outwards will extend the name of the audio stream far enough to see the currenly playing track and the artist.
