Open source software is software which the source code is avaliable for viewing. This contrasts with proprietary software where the source code is regarded as a trade secret and kept private. The promise of open source is better quality, higher reliability, more flexibility, lower cost, and an end to predatory vendor lock-in.

You can view this concept in terms of cooking: with open source food you're given the recipie, whereas with closed source or proprietary food you're just told it has 11 secret herbs and spices. Mmm, chicken.

Free Software

Free and Open Source software (often abbreviated as FOSS) is software that can be modified and redistributed. Licenses such as the BSD license allows use of code including commercial, provided attribution is given. The GPL allows commercial use, provided that people can still get access to the source code, and changes are given back to the community.

Whole Wheat Radio uses many open source packages including the AMP (Apache, MySQL and PHP) suite of programs, and as a listener you can use free and open source operating systems such as Linux or FreeBSD and media players such as amaroK to tune in.
