Lyrics

By J.P. Jones

crawlin out of wakefield

i was named after my uncle who was s'posed to be great
daddy hated him until i learned how to hate
we moved up to a house in East Longmeadow at 3
back in the days when a suburb had trees
landlord pulled that house down while we was livin in it
crawlin out of wakefield on a pirate ship

my momma worked the cornfield, sold avon door to door
my sisters on the farm wondered what a shakespeare's for
i tooled around the orchard, hauled my apples to the kitchen
watched saturday cartoons on the rich folks television
doctor told my momma that my daddy was real sick
crawlin out of wakefield on a pirate ship

i was six or seven when i got me the blues
the house wopuld shake and rattle from the b-52's
flying into Chicopee at 4 a.m.
loaded with the nightmare of the living end
hollerin in the darkness, "daddy, come here quick!"
crawlin out of wakefield on a pirate ship

too smart for my own good dressed up in my hand-me-downs
anywhere i went it was the dark side of town
teachers was all white folks-- i was the lucky one
black kids beat me up some times, i couldn't blame em none
you learn to hide your pride and do not give no lip
crawlin out of wakefield on a pirate ship

knee-deep in the wreckage of my so-called mental health
wasn't taking prisoners except, of course, my self
lacking any maps or chart i set out on my search
Jung and old and New Age and the Springfield Baptist Church
yes I tried religion but it did not stick
crawlin out of wakefield on a pirate ship

i cut my first lp in '73 on c b s
someone musta thought I had some promise, I guess
when it hit the fan i had the man on the phone, said,
"we own all your shit, but, baby, you're on your own"
aint no second chances when you don't got no hit
crawlin out of wakefield on a pirate ship

all my days I hunger after heroes from the sea
daddy liked to gamble, left the drinkin up to me
i was left to ramble from New England on south
met most every kind who suck the soul out through your mouth
daddy like to gamble-- didn't drink a lick
crawlin out of wakefield on a pirate ship

see me as a monkey in my easter bonnet
a guitar and a typewriter-- I'll jump up on it
tap-dance like a centipede upon a comet
give me time and time enough I'll write your sonnet
when they ask me how I do it, I just say
Shakespeare got it done cause nothin got it his way
