Daniel was a thistle, blowing in the wind

But when he left her for the gold in California,
He held his Sally close and he told her:

Sally planted flowers by her swinging gate,
Daffodils to mark the time that she had to wait.
Daniel wrote her letters posted from the road,

Well, the fever took sweet Sally in spring of '68,
With Dan a mere two miles away from Sally's swinging gate-
The daffodils were blooming, he laid some on her grave.
He wept himself to sleep that night
