This might be my all time favorite Christmas carol. Such a lovely melody. My guitar arrangement is based on a piece called “Nell’s Nocturne”, written by Geoff in honor of his late mother. This is a 15th century German carol called “Es Ist Ein Ros’” first published in 1599, harmonized by German composer and musicologist Michael Praetorius in 1609, and translated to English by American music scholar Theodore Baker in 1894. [1]

Lo, how a Rose e’er blooming from tender stem hath sprung
Of Jesse’s lineage coming, as those of old have sung.
It came, a floweret bright, amid the cold of winter,
When half spent was the night.

Isaiah ’twas foretold it, the Rose I have in mind;
With Mary we behold it, the virgin mother kind.
