History

Things were happening, plans were (almost) afoot.... I knew I was going to leave the USA & return to Australia, but I didn't know just when. I figured I'd write a song about this change of direction, this new focus... I was turning my back on almost 30 years in California... I was "lookin' south!" But instead of that the project turned out to be just a song about women... some of it's true.

Looking South © Stephen Lomas 2003

She said those things you want the most that's what you need the least
I followed her up the mountain & got lost among the pines
She left me in some hollow there, somewhere the sun don’t shine.
And me I didn't worry at all
I thought we could work it out
But Mary kept looking off to the east
While I was looking south

Kathleen was a working girl, all day eight hours straight
I’d meet her when the whistle blew down by the factory gate
Our nights they flowed like music, love was reckless & headstrong
She said you lack commitment I said I’d done nothing wrong.
Kathleen’s songs were all of struggle
Her voice was passionate, devout
She was looking for revolution
And I was just looking south.

I met Katy along the shore someplace that sailors go
I was looking for some answers & she looked like she might know.
I couldn’t help but love the way the wind it took her hair
And she’d wipe the salt spray from her face perhaps it was a tear
Then she went aboard a sailing ship
I saw her waving from the bow
She was lookin' for Barbados
I was just looking south

I met a girl from Canada in Queensland on a train
Three days & nights we traveled north but I forget her name
We’d sit up in the dining car & talk all through the night
Sometimes there was a crossing bell sometimes a distant light
Frost streaked across the window,
She was staring off in the darkness
And I was looking south

There’s so much that has happened since, I been married once or twice
Always found just what I wanted & I always paid the price
You never can leave it all behind each memory leaves a scar
They’ll find you out for better or worse no matter where you are
And still I never worry at all
It'd be no use no how
I might sometimes look behind me
But still, I’m lookin' south
