While driving home from a show in Boston one night, it occurred to me that these songs all share similar chord progressions and haunting melodies, and I was curious to see how they would fit within the context of a medley. We Three Kings Of Orient Are was written in 1857 by church music instructor John Henry Hopkins for a Christmas pageant he produced at the General Theological Seminary in New York City. O Come O Come Emmanuel dates back to medieval times. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen was first published in 1827 in England but is probably much older. Riu Riu Chiu dates back to 16th century Spain, and concerns a nightingale, a river, and the Christmas story…in this version I cover the chorus only; listen to Bruce Cockburn’s lovely album “Christmas” for the complete song.
