This music was inspired by a book entitled The Long Walk by Slavomir Rawicz (Lyon & Burford Press, 1956) which relates the story of how the author, a 26 year-old Polish cavalry lieutenant was captured by the Soviets in 1941 and accused of spying for the Germans. After sampling enought of Soviet prison hospitality he resolves to escape and with 6 others does so in the middle of the Siberian winter. It's an amazing story. I played all the guitars and was joined by my friends Bill Gurley on psycho-fiddle and mandolin and Larry Emanuel and his wonderful world of percussion. Who knew that clay pots could sound like this? I didn't. Larry would like to thank Norfolk, VA pottery artist John Dietrich for making the Nigerian-style udu drums. Thanks also to my friend Frances Stout for the book.
