Trivia, story behind the song, etc.

The Scene of the Crime was inspired by a visit back to the ranch in San Luis Obispo where David lived until the age of three. It describes his and his father's running away and asks 'Why do I always hurt the people I love, time after time after time? Why do I always come back to the scene of the crime?' Peter Grant's cello-like Hawaiian guitar and Mark Swindell's fiddle themes help set the mood. Theresa Coyle contributes her clear and gorgeous harmony. Matt Bohn (Highlife Express) adds his thoughtful and creative bass lines to this and all the following tracks.

Lyrics

THE SCENE OF THE CRIME

© Copyright copyright David Anderson, Moccasin Telegraph Music (ASCAP)

Wildflower fields for a young boy's feet
Railroad tracks and a dead end street
A means of escape and a way to repeat
My father's mistakes

Why do I always hurt the people I love
Time after time after time
Why do I always come back
To the scene of the crime

He left his family when he was sixteen
Freight trains and med school
And the spaces between
Before he could stop it a war intervened
And a child was awake

I've been a good son I've been a thief
I am a soldier of true belief
But this is the longest that my life
Has ever been did it ever begin

I ran away before I was five
But the hobos brought me back
And I was raised by their wives
The next time I left
It was out of the lives
Of my children

Why do I always hurt the people I love
It's just a matter of time
Trying to keep my heart on the track
Straight to the end of the line
Looking at all of the places I've been
And the time I spent waiting
For my life to begin
Why do I always come back
To the scene of the crime
