Ukulele
From WWR
"Ukulele" (oo-koo-LEH-leh) means "jumping fleas", a real testament to the popularity of this Hawaiian instrument. Actually, the name is said to come from the impression made by a Portuguese sailer named Joao Fernandes, who played his native braguinha while he sang folk songs to the locals in 1879. To the amazed Hawaiians watching, his fast moving fingers looked like ukulele, or "jumping fleas". Over time, they adapted the instrument to their own use, and it has come to be synonymous with Hawaiian music.
One of the most popular ukulele players among the WWR listeners is "Iz", or Israel Kamakawiwo'Ole.
