About me
I live in the woods a couple of miles from Mackinaw IL with my husband, Jeff Imig, and our four cats. I teach computer workshops at a local college and I am a freelance writer. Oh, and web content provider. And freelance...whatever.
I sort of forgot to grow up and get a real job.
I've been around the web since Mosaic was the only browser and there was no GUI interface for web design. I dabble... a lot... and you just never know where you're going to find me on the planet. Or in what media.
Here are a few places:
- Judy Rosella Edwards dot com
- EcoLitGy Communications
- EcoLitGy Blog
- EcoLitGy Electronic Cards (so old I won't guarantee they work!)
- Way back in 2000, I participated in Behind the Curtain. My name is still listed there. Hard to believe that only 110 of us participated around the GLOBE. I wonder how many would participate today? Anyway, I moved my project to my own server when my EditThisPage site went away. I was real into the geeky stuff from Dave Winer at the time. Gradually I have migrated more toward the content side of things and decided to let others play with the gears.

- My latest project is I Can Do This, a Moodle project. It was literally born on New Year's Eve 2008. Aren't you supposed to get a prize for the first baby of the year?
Jeff is a retired Research Engineer from the Psychology Department at a local university. He really retired because he was tired of Ph.D.'s asking him to fix their printers. He still does pretty much what he did when he was getting paid for.
Life is always one more experiment....
And amateur musician. Player, not performer. But you'll have to ask him about the difference. And dance instructor. And Sci-Fi freak. And Über computer geek. And magician. Here are some of Jeff's assorted links:
- No Computers Yeah. Right. We have a whole basement full of computers....
- Cats At Gooseberry Hill
- Sermon on the Lawn, which is actually part of Stop Mowing dot com, where Jeff has posted the all-essential Poison Ivy Tutorial! Must read if you live in the woods!
- Peace Aerobics
- Jeff's Reading
- Health Blog, Eco Blog, Age Blog. He's serious about "Get fit using a treadmill laptop holder" and has swiped my iron holder with the intention of turning it into a bookholder for the treadmill. It's ok. He reads more than I iron.
Where We live
We live at Heritage Lake, an unincorporated lake community.
This is our frontyard:
This is our backyard:
You should not live here if you don't have 4-wheel drive. Actually, I think they should stop you from driving around the lake at all if you don't have 4-wheel drive! I'm tired of dodging drivers without it and seeing the lake have to replace stop signs drivers have mowed down.

The Mackinaw River is flooding. Again. It does this all the time. Ain't no thang. But it looks really bad! We're lucky. We live on top of one of the highest points around. We may have trouble GOING anyplace but at least we won't float away.
The weather service predicts the Mackinaw will crest sometime this afternoon. But, then tonight it is supposed to snow on top of the flood waters. And then snow again on Saturday. Welcome to Illinois in January.
Real winter doesn't hit here until March!
My interests / hobbies
Genealogy, travel (especially hostelling), Intentional Community, writing. I'd rather write than read. That sounds really pompous of me, doesn't it?
I love cats. You haven't been loved until you have been loved by a cat.
People who break stereotypes.
Your gender, age, etc. (completely optional)
I am not optional but I am 51 (born 1956).
How I found WWR
I am researching the magic of communities of Less 10K and was reading about Pam Flowers and Shelley Gill, Alaska residents. Okay, that's a big jump.
I started by identifying communities of Less than 10K where people live who most of us would never expect. Twyla Tharp was the first. I can't remember how or why. But she grew up in Portland IN: less than 10K.
There is a cut-off of 10,000 residents for a lot of government funding. It seems any community of one to 9,999 people is not equal to the rest of the world. That's an international figure. The United Nations uses it. You'll find it as a cut-off point around the globe.
Then there is the internet, tv, and basically any kind of media. I really like sites like Not For Tourists. I'm a member. Have the badge. But do we really need to be told about ice cream at FAO Schwarz in New York City? Or anything in New York City? Plus, back to the Less Than 10K idea, the article talks about Bassett's Ice Cream, now at FAO Schwarz. The writer talks about how Philadelphians have liked it for years. She totally missed this little treasure: Bassett's Ice Cream was originally made in Salem, NJ. Population 5,857.
Talking Street falls into the same category. I've been to Boston. So have millions of other people. There are books, travelguides, videos, movies, poems, songs, and jingles about it. I'm bored. And apparently I can't add a tour like a visit to Lavender Creek Farm here in Mackinaw IL (population 1,452). The owners hand you a wicker basket and a pair of scissors trimmed with ribbons. You wander unescorted through the lavender fields, surrounded by a cloud of butterflies, clipping your own locally-grown lavender until your basket is full. You take your basket up to pay for your herbs and they serve you lavender lemonade and lavender cookies. You can't help but buy some essential oil and pick up the instructions for making a lavender doll. If you'd like to share the experience with friends, there are little al fresco tables and benches scattered around the property where you can sit and revel in the acres of lavender surrounding you. Now that is interesting. But you won't find it on Talking Street. And you won't find it in New York City.
I'm far more intrigued that Whole Wheat Radio exists -- and in Talkeetna (population Less than 10K). I'm still trying to figure out how it survives financially but the technology here beats the traditional radio station handsdown. WWR has listener participation, instant and constant listener feedback... well, I guess I'm preaching to the choir here.
Big cities are not that interesting. At least not to me. I don't believe humans function well in large cities. I don't know what the ideal community size is but I don't think you need to physically live there and I don't think it has to consist of millions of people. The Small Town Project shows promise. I also like the Small House Society but I can't have one because there are minimum house sizes where I live.
Anyway, back to the music.
I like the CD Baby connection at WWR, promoting artist sales. I shopped CD Baby even before I found WWR.
So... that's how I found WWR.
