About me

I moved to Talkeetna in 1981 from Eugene, Oregon at the age of 26 and have pretty much been here ever since. I came to work for Mac Stevens doing land surveying work, blew myself up in a propane explosion in 1985, recovered, got registered and bought his business in 1993. Been ekeing out a living ever since, sometimes working for other surveyors/engineers. Have had good opportunities to work all over this beautiful state. I've played with a number of musical groups over the years, none of which anyone will remember but they were: The Bush Bros., Son of Bush, The Resentments, Maximum Jones (with Esther), The Big Cabbage Band, Short Term Memory, The Talkeetna Travelers, The Weeping Willies, The Simpletones, Rare Form and Slick Willy and the Swinging Chads. My main instrument is piano, but have been playing string bass and guitar in recent years with the Simpletones.

Rocco John Iacovone and I have been playing jazz at the Fairview Inn in Talkeetna every summer since 1999. Rocco and his wife Denise teach school in NYC and come to Talkeetna in the summer. Denise is a great artist. She has been making a painting (usually watercolor) every time we play for the past 6 or 7 years. They're pretty cool. Denise painted "Conversation in 3" during the gig that the Rare Form CD of the same name was recorded. Her painting is the cover for that CD. We were fortunate to play with drummer Gary Frommer that night and a couple of other times that summer. Gary had the most impressive resume of anyone I've known personally having played and recorded with Art Pepper and Maynard Ferguson. He also played with a Who's Who of modern jazz including Art Blakey, Philly Joe Jones, Miles Davis and Eric Dolphy. Rocco and I were sorry to learn of Gary's passing in May of 2005.

In 2003 I started playing bass with the Simpletones which was and is a pretty loose collection of characters playing mostly Old Time Music but many other styles as well. The bass has been a great learning experience forcing me to finally become an "ear" musician, which is really the only way to be. My problem with jazz is that I've been married to the page (reading music) for too long ... it really gets in the way of proper improvisation. The bass efforts have had some good crossover to the piano and the jazz world but I'm still a long way from being what I would consider a "real" jazz musician. Sorry, Jac :-).

Anyway, music is what keeps me going ... it's an endless journey, but a journey with a heart. WWR has been a wonderful tool toward that end ... In the few months that I've been here, I've heard so many great musicians for the first time. The community is wonderful, Jim's the best ... try to check out the palace if you ever get a chance. It's a magic place. Anyway, full speed ahead!

Anagrammaticly speaking

So you know the Whole Wheat Radio animation that appears occasionally in the upper left hand portion of the screen where the letters of WHOLE WHEAT RADIO are rearranged into a different text? e.g. "O WITH HARD ALE WOE"

Well here are a few I came up with:

O HOW WE TRADE HAIL

HALO TEA, HOW WEIRD

HOW WE TRIED, ALOHA

HI LEO, WHO ATE WARD?

ADO, THAW WIRE HOLE

WHAT, HIDE RAW OLEO?

OW, WHERE TO, DAHLIA?

OH, WORD, I EAT WHALE

I'm thinking these sentences could be a nice little framework to build a one act play around. Yes, I DO enjoy wasting time. Aloha!

Horoscope

Today's horoscope for Gemini:
One of the people you deal with on a nearly daily basis is not shy about singing your praises -- but in their admiration of you, they might be shaping themselves a little too much in your image. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but this might start to feel a little too much like outright copying. If you feel like they are shadowing you too closely, take action. Let them know that they don't have to copy you -- they are special being just who they are.
Looks like a 4 wheatberry day for you dear Gemini.
